Last Saturday, Brave Box was lucky enough to be invited to participate in the wellness tent at the Relay for Life in Saline, MI.
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's primary, volunteer driven fundraiser. Their main objective is to raise money for patient treatment and research; however, the event has a much broader scope than just fundraising. It was so empowering to see people gather together in the name of fighting this disease. There were many survivors walking around wearing "survivor" sashes and their caretakers were decorated in a similar fashion. Cancer can be very isolating and having an event like this is invaluable not only to the patient but the family and community as well.
Sadly, the weather last Saturday was much less than desirable. After almost losing our tent to the wind and trying to stay warm in the barely 50 degree rainy weather, we all rallied together to make the most of it! I met some really amazing people. To me, the best part about Relay for Life, is that every single person there has been affected by cancer, BUT is doing something about it. It's one of those events that really makes you believe in the human spirit and the power of community.
